Inaugural "North 2 South" Baseball Classic

On June 25th and 28th, the North End will meet the South End in the spirit of baseball through the first “North 2 South Baseball Classic.” Sponsored by State Representative Aaron Michlewitz, the classic will be played by the Little League All-Star teams from the North End Athletic Association and South End Baseball.

Rep. Michlewitz said that “campaigning last year made me realize that these two neighborhoods have many common attributes and great baseball organizations being one of them. Having been a coach myself for the previous seven years in youth sports, this seemed like a natural step. This is hopefully the start of an annual event between the two neighborhoods.”

The baseball tournament is also intended to raise awareness for the “North 2 South Foundation,” an initiative that Michlewitz recently announced to fund educational scholarships for students in the 3rd Suffolk District.

There will be two 7-inning games, one in each neighborhood for the 12 and under age division. Aaron Michlewitz and Matthew Imbergamo have coached the North End Dodgers for the past seven years. Michlewitz took off last year while running for State Representative. Dom Campochiaro is NEAA President and John Romano is NEAA Commissioner. Owen Carlson is the Commissioner of South End Baseball.

The North End game will be played at Langone Park on Commercial Street on Friday, June 25th and the South End game will be played on the following Monday, June 28th at Luis Taint Field at Peters Park in the South End. Both games start at 6:00 pm. Both groups are hoping for a strong neighborhood turnout and will be offering food and refreshments.

In other NEAA news, the Majors Yourth Baseball Progam will have its annual All-Star Game on June 29th at 7:00 p.m. at Puopolo Park. The best players from each of the five teams will make up the all-star team. There also will be food and refreshments.

2010 NEAA Baseball Registration

The North End Athletic Association (NEAA) will hold an early baseball registration period from January 17th to the 31st.

A neighborhood baseball program, the NEAA Youth Baseball League provides a comprehensive baseball experience for youth in the North End, Waterfront, Back Bay, Beacon Hill and other surrounding neighborhoods combining teamwork, sportsmanship and skill building in a family atmosphere. Boys and girls ages 6 to 12 as of April 30th 2010 can register for the 2010 Minors Youth Baseball Program (ages 6 to 8) and the Majors Youth Baseball Program (ages 9-12). The fee during the early registration period will remain the same as last year, $35.00 per player.

The purpose of early registration is to help give the organizers of both programs the ability to plan properly for another fantastic season of youth baseball in the North End.  The NEAA inconjunction with the Nazzaro Center will also host preseason clinics for all ages.  Details on Coach Dom's Clinic, T-Ball and Babe Ruth League (Ages 13 -15) will follow soon.

"Our goal is to provide the ultimate baseball learning experience by promoting competitive play, while instilling sportsmanship, preserving the fun of participation and creating the opportunity to make lifelong friendships," stated NEAA Baseball Coordinator John Romano.  NEAA volunteer commissioners, coaches and administrators have over 100 years of combined experience in providing baseball programs to the youth of Boston neighborhoods.  Commissioners Frank Iudiciani and Peter Sherin will return to again oversee the Youth Major's Program.

You can register on-line at neaabaseball.com starting on Sunday January 17th or in person at the Nazzaro Community Center, 30 North Bennet St starting on Tuesday January 19th.  For more information please contact John Romano at patjr@comcast.net.
