Globe Highlights Trash Cleanup Efforts of North Ender, Naomi Paul

The efforts of NEWRA’s Clean Streets co-chair, Naomi Paul, are highlighted on the front page of today’s Boston Globe. In a story by Meghan Irons, it is noted that 1,600 green tickets have been issued since April in the North End after the passing of the Green Ticket ordinance that adds fines to property owner’s tax bill. (More on the Green Ticket law.)

Naomi Paul (center), leads a NEWRA Clean Streets Committee meeting with co-chair, Patricia Thiboutot (left). Photo: Matt ContiAn excerpt from the Globe article: “On a walk through her neighborhood recently, Naomi Paul spotted two stuffed trash bags casually dropped near a city bin on Hanover Street, the bustling spine of the North End. “This is illegal,’’ Paul said and whipped out a cellphone. In seconds, she had a city official on the line taking down the address. Complaints about trash in the streets have been particularly vehement in the North End, a small neighborhood packed with restaurants and cafes, some 12,000 residents, and throngs of tourists — and a place where some recall a time when people swept the walks in front of their homes.”

The Clean Streets Committee has created a tip sheet for residents. Copies of the tip sheet and large scale refrigerator magnets are available by emailing cleanstreets@newra.org.

For those interested in North End trash issues, there is a meeting this Thursday, August 12th where new Public Works Commissioner Massaro will be presenting her vision for clean neighborhoods. The meeting is at 7pm at the Nazzaro Center. More information at www.NEWRA.org.

Vote for "Dark Tide" in Boston.com's Reading Program

Vote for your favorite book in the new Boston.com reading program. If you live or work in the North End, “Dark Tide,” by Stephen Puleo, is the natural choice!  “Dark Tide” is the story of the Great Molasses Flood of 1919 when a tidal wave of molasses — 2.3 million gallons — flooded the North End, killing 21 people. Puleo also examines the larger issues in Boston at the time that led to the collapse of the tank.

The Boston.com Book Club
“After lamenting the absence of a One Book, One City program in Boston, the Globe decided to launch an experiment: a citywide reading program of its own. Here’s how the Globe online book club will work: What follows is a list of 10 books, many of which were culled from readers’ suggestions. The list — we hope — has something for everyone; each book certainly has plenty of meat for discussion. The only theme: All the books have local interest. Readers will have one week to vote for their pick (voting closes July 13). Once the winner is announced participants will then have a month to read the book. At the end of the month Boston.com will host a discussion with an expert moderator.” —Nicole Lamy, Globe Staff

As of this writing, “Dark Tide” was nearly tied with “All Souls,” by Michael Patrick McDonald and ahead of “Common Ground,” by Anthony Lukas. Short descriptions of all the nominee books is available here. Voting closes on July 13th.

Once again, vote at the following website:

Harbor Towers Fights Chiofaro With Comments on Newspaper Websites

Just in case you thought those anonymous reader comments on newspaper websites were on the level, the battle over Harbor Garage shows how website comments are being used by both sides hoping to sway public (and political) opinion.

Bruce Mohl of Commonwealth Magazine highlights a recent email sent by a Harbor Towers consultant to residents fighting the media war against Don Chiofaro’s proposal for high-rise towers at the Harbor Garage site.

“The reader comments at the end of online newspaper stories are apparently becoming a battle ground in the fight over a proposed high-rise tower along the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. Tom Palmer, a former Boston Globe development reporter who now does public affairs consulting for Harbor Towers residents opposed to the skyscraper, sent an email to his clients Saturday in which he praised the city for blocking the building with new height restrictions along the Greenway but bemoaned his former employer’s coverage of the issue.”

After a recent call with Casey Ross, a Boston Globe reporter, Palmer’s email prepares Harbor Tower residents for an upcoming article and how to fight back by writing anonymous comments on the Globe’s website.

“So, we will read the profile (and other future stories, no doubt), and we should comment. “Commenting” — that is, writing in comments at the end of the electronic (web) versions of articles in the media — as many of you know has become an important and even necessary way to influence opinion. … What you do is choose some clever little moniker for yourself (most people make them non-self identifying), and then comment under that name. It’s all free. (Which is another reason the mainstream media are collapsing, but that’s another matter.)”

Click to read the entire email sent to Harbor Towers’ residents.

Of course, the Chiofaro Company encourages its supporters to write comments too. Their Facebook page links to the newspaper articles so fans can comment and its website encourages similar participation.

(P.S. - Nothing against Harbor Towers residents, Tom Palmer nor their position on the issue. I understand they are just reacting to the same anonymous posts made by the developer’s side.)

Yemen LNG Tankers Coming To Boston Harbor

The Globe is reporting that public officials are concerned about the arrival of LNG (liquified natural gas) tankers coming through Boston Harbor from Yemen.

"Menino and several other public officials said they would press for the tankers’ cargo - destined for an LNG terminal in Everett as soon as next month - to instead be unloaded away from the city, in light of the failed Christmas Day attempt by a Nigerian man, who trained in Yemen, to blow up a US airliner over Detroit."

An LNG tanker makes its way through Boston Harbor.
